Statement from Alexandra Forter Sirota, Director of the Budget & Tax Center, on the House Finance Committee's Earned Income Tax Credit vote

Voting not to reinstate the EITC is a huge loss for nearly 1 million struggling North Carolinians

RALEIGH (June 11, 2014) — The House Finance Committee’s vote today was a big loss for nearly 1 million working North Carolina taxpayers who are struggling to make ends meet.

By voting not to reinstate the Earned Income Tax Credit the committee is removing a crucial tool to help hardworking, low-paid families meet their children’s needs and move toward the economic security of the middle-class.

This is yet another reminder of how the tax plan passed last year hurts North Carolinians and the state’s economy. The committee had a chance to undo some of that damage and instead turned its back on the needs of working people.
