Clermont Fraser joined the Justice Center as a staff attorney with the Immigrants Legal Assistance Project in September 2007. Clermont graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in May 2007, where she was awarded the Powell Fellowship in Legal Services. The fellowship is given each year to a graduating student pursuing a public service career. As a Powell Fellow, Clermont advocates on behalf of North Carolina’s migrant workers who travel from Mexico to eastern North Carolina each year on temporary work visas to pick crabs and shuck oysters. Clermont went to law school knowing that she wanted to use her legal degree to fight for social justice for low-wage immigrant workers. As a law student, she led the Migrant Farmworker Project, interned with the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, VA, and interned with Southern Migrant Legal Services in Nashville, TN.
