Tell Senators Burr and Tillis to oppose any paid leave plan that relies on Social Security funds!

This week, Senator Marco Rubio is expected to introduce a deeply flawed, incomplete plan for a paid leave program.

  • It raids Social Security. The plan diverts money from the Social Security Trust Fund to provide new parents with income to support them after the birth of their child. This will lead to Social Security running out of money years sooner.
  • It doesn't cover most caregiving needs. Seventy-five percent of individuals who seek FMLA to fulfill family caregiver duties, or recover from a serious illness or procedure, are left out in the cold
  • People who use leave would have to retire later. In exchange for receiving benefits up front for parental leave, working parents would in turn delay the ability to draw their Social Security for months, even years, each time they use leave throughout their careers.

The Rubio plan is #FakePaidLeave. But a real paid leave plan already exists—the FAMILY Act would establish a national paid family and medical leave insurance program, covering all types of paid leave needs, not just parental leave. The FAMILY Act would help families build their wealth for retirement, not delay it.

Tell NC Congressional delegation to protect children and keep families intact!

Under the direction of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, parents who cross illegally into the U.S. will not only face criminal prosecution but also be separated from their children at the border. Young children – in a foreign land where they do not speak the language – will be sent to shelters while their parents are imprisoned.

Our North Carolina lawmakers need to hear that Jeff Sessions’ policy is unacceptable and that North Carolinians support protecting children and keeping families intact.

Tell them that this unconscionable policy to separate families puts into question our collective humanity as a nation. Unnecessary separation of families is harmful not only to families, but also to our country’s values.

Tell North Carolina's federal delegation to REJECT adding citizenship question to 2020 Census!

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced its decision to include a citizenship question in the 2020 Census. Adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census questionnaire is the wrong choice for our state and nation.

  • The Census affects how federal resources are allocated to NC and provides decision-makers with the information they need to ensure government resources are directed strategically to our communities.
  • Adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census will deter participation by North Carolina's foreign-born population, resulting in less accurate data. Census representatives have reported widespread fear among respondents to other surveys, as households are reluctant to participate fully and provide accurate information.
  • Adding the citizenship question is costly. If individuals do not initially respond to the questionnaire, the Bureau will follow-up by sending enumerators to their homes, and costs will increase exponentially.

Tell Congress to Protect SNAP!

Last week, the House Agricultural Committee passed their version of the 2018 Farm Bill. Chairman Conaway's proposal would increase hunger and further burden struggling North Carolinians by cutting, and in many cases taking away, SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) and other food assistance. Its effects will ripple through communities, businesses, and farms across generations.

Rather than helping those in need by providing job training opportunities or ensuring workers earn a living wage, this proposal seeks to take away their food. The effects of these harsh changes will be felt by everyone, including parents raising children, people with disabilities, older workers, low-wage workers, and those unable to find jobs.

Tell the N.C. General Assembly to stop upcoming tax cuts!

Stopping the tax cuts scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2019, in North Carolina would provide $900 million each year to improve access to early childhood programs, address the affordable housing crisis and provide health care services to hundreds of thousands and much more. It would also make sure that wealthy taxpayers and profitable corporations don't continue to get tax breaks year after year that won't strengthen our communities.

Take action today and tell your lawmakers to choose people over tax cuts!
