| RALEIGH (July 19, 2022) – The North Carolina Justice Center, working with attorneys at Brooks Pierce, filed a motion before the North Carolina Supreme Court to submit an amicus brief outlining the shortfalls in educational resources and funding in North Carolina. The brief, which contains research assistance from the Public School Forum and community input from the Every Child NC coalition, stresses the importance of the targeted investments outlined in the Leandro Comprehensive Remedial Plan.
The Leandro case has continued for decades without a resolution. Students from historically marginalized communities—including students of color, students from low-income communities, and students with disabilities—can no longer wait to receive the education the North Carolina constitution guarantees.
The brief is supported by an overwhelming body of research and the firsthand experiences of a coalition of 144 education, civil rights, philanthropic, and community-based organizations.
“North Carolina has consistently failed to give every child in this state access to the education they need, deserve, and are constitutionally mandated to receive,” said Rick Glazier, Executive Director of the North Carolina Justice Center. “This is a historic opportunity before the Court to break this cycle and dramatically improve public education for generations to come.”
