North Carolina has long had one of the worst performing unemployment insurance (UI) systems in the country. UI was designed as a social insurance program, providing cash payments to jobless workers who have lost a job through no fault of their own. North Carolina’s inadequate UI benefits and the barriers to accessing them are particularly felt by underserved communities and those who need these payments the most. This 2024 report by our Workers’ Rights Project explores several ways to make the UI system more equitable.
