EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
- Indigent Defense Services (IDS) is a critical part of fair and equal access to justice under the law.
- The House budget would dramatically slash funding for IDS. Taking the last budget into account, the combined underfunding for IDS would be $32 million.
- Investing in IDS saves money. In states across the country, failure to invest in indigent defense has increased long-term costs to the state and reduced the availability of effective representation.
