December 22, 2022 (Raleigh, NC) – The Fair Chance Criminal Justice Team commends Governor Cooper’s recent actions of clemency for 10 people impacted by the justice system. Governor Roy Cooper announced Tuesday the commutation of six people’s sentences in North Carolina prisons, and four others have been granted pardons of forgiveness.

“This is a step in the right direction. It is great news for the people and their families,” FCCJ Director Laura Holland said. “But we know there is still more to be done when thousands of North Carolinians still languish behind bars waiting for their fair chance.”

For three years, the Decarcerate Now NC Coalition has gathered at the Governor’s Executive Mansion every December to stand vigil, asking Governor Cooper to use his powers of clemency to grant pardons and sentence commutations to people who are currently incarcerated. The Vigil will continue as we advocate for freedom, justice, and second chances.
