Isabel Shapiro recruited and interviewed directly impacted taxpayers, conducted in-depth research, and drafted the report about the Unauthorized Substance Tax (the NC Drug Tax), “Nothing to do with Grace, Nothing to do with Justice: The Human Impact of North Carolina’s Unauthorized Substances Tax,” while she was a Master of Public Policy Candidate at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.  

Isabel Shapiro interned with the Fair Chance Criminal Justice Project during the summer of 2021, during which time she researched and wrote factsheets about the NC Drug Tax, Discretionary Registration of people convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery, and access to state I.D. for people reentering society.
