(Raleigh, NC – August 22, 2025) NC Justice Center attorneys joined Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, Congresswoman Deborah Ross, and the former director of the Federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Rohit Chopra, to discuss how to protect consumers from scams, fraud, and counterfeit goods amid an effort by the current administration to decrease funding for and enforcement actions by the CFPB.
“We have a great relationship with our attorney general’s consumer affairs division. We do what we can, but it’s never going to be enough to fill the gap in the absence of robust federal enforcement,” said Peter Gilbert, Litigation Director.
The group also talked about the challenges they’re facing at the state level.
“We’re trying to hang on to the enforcement mechanisms that we have, and use those the best we can for consumers,” said Jason Pikler, Deputy Director of the Housing and Consumer Energy Project.
